Situated on the same latitude of Miyazaki in Kyushu, Aogashima is a subtropic paradise with a mild, humid climate under the influence of the Kuroshio warm current, and home for many different wild birds. The last known volcanic eruption of Aogashima in the late 18th century killed many villagers and forced the entire population to evacuate from the island. It took them almost fifty years to return to the island.

>Otonbu
A composite volcano, Aogashima consists of the rims of the inner and outer craters. Otonbu, the peak of the rim of the outer crater at a height of 432 meters above sea level, is also the highest spot in the island. It commands a panoramic view of the entire volcano in the Pacific Ocean.

>Geothermal Sauna
Fureai Sauna, a public facility utilizing geothermal power and gas, features a sauna, a public bath, hot showers, a social lounge and a cooking furnace. Cooking eggs using the furnace is a popular attraction in the island.

>Hingya Salt
There are many volcanic blowholes (called "hingya" in dialect) in the island. Villagers make salt by heating seawater from the Kuroshio current using steam from such blowholes. This calcium-rich salt is a popular souvenir.

The website of Aogashima Village Office offers information on accommodation in the island. You are requested to call the minshuku (a Japanese-style B&B) of your choice directly for booking your room. (Since there are no bilingual staff at B&Bs in the island, please contact in Japanese)
