Chichijima, the largest island in the Ogasawara archipelago, can only be reached by taking a 25-hour boat trip from Tokyo. The island is a tropical paradise with diverse attractions. Many precious species of animals and plants live in and around Chichijima such as endemic birds and plants in forests, beautiful corals, tropical fish, and whales and dolphins coming for rearing their young. The most popular ecotourism attraction in Chichijima is whale watching. It is truly an awesome experience to see a whale breaching, heaving its huge body out of the water. Whales come close to the island from December to May. The best season for whale watching is the period between February and April.
