AO-CHU is a distilled beverage, called shochu, that was made by wives on the island waiting for the return of their husbands working off the island. The method of production and taste have been handed down to their sons for generations. Because of its unique production and enhancement methods, which took time and effort, this shochu was enjoyed “in secret” among a small number of people as it could not be mass produced. However, there are now 13 brands. It is also available at some places on the mainland of Tokyo.
