Mt. Hachijo-Fuji

Mt. Hachijo-Fuji is the tallest mountain of the Tokyo Islands, with a height of 854 meters. It is a composite volcano that has been dormant since the last eruption in 1605. On the “ohachi meguri” walking around the crater tour, the central cone in the crater can be seen. The mountain foot spreads gracefully and widely just like that of Mt. Fuji, and tranquil pastoral scenery characterizes “Fureai Bokujo” ranch, around the 7th station of the mountain, where cattle are pastured.

Osato no Tama-ishigaki

Osato no Tama-ishigaki

The Osato district, a place that had an island office in the past, retains a lot of stone walls created by piling up cobble stones, and presents a unique scenery. Cobble stones are natural stones that become round in shape by being washed back and forth in the ocean by strong waves. The cobbles of the walls are said to have been gathered up from Maezakigahama and Yokomagaura beaches by banished exiles. The walls are considered to be an important historical material telling a tale of “an island of exiles.”

Nanpara Senjojiki

Nanpara Senjojiki

Stretching along the coast near Yaene Port, Nanpara Senjojiki is a huge black plateau formed from volcanic lava from a Hachijo-Fuji eruption. With a length of 500 meters and a depth of 100 meters, the black plateau of lava astonishes visitors by its scale. The ocean side of the plateau has long eroded over time to form a rocky area, which has become an ideal spot for rock fishing.

Uramigataki

Uramigataki

The name “Uramigataki” derives from the unique scenery of “viewing a waterfall from the backside.” It has a walking path built on the back side of a waterfall where a lot of plants such as hego and plants grow thick. One round takes about 20 minutes. There is a popular open-air hot spring spa on the other side of the path, from which splendid views can be seen. Wearing a bathing suit is required. Free admission. No soap can be used.
